To enhance the learning capabilities of the students about:
• Ethernet LAN
• Virtual LAN
• MAC addressing
A university has a small network infrastructure to support its routine operations which are divided among different departments like Administration, Registration, Examination, Finance, IT and Academics. A switch has been deployed to connect all the systems of these departments to a single broadcast domain. Considering the above-mentioned scenario, you are required to answer the following:
a) If a packet is received by a system in Examination department, how would the switch will decide that the packet is either unicast or broadcast?
b) If a broadcast packet is generated by a system in Finance department, which system(s) will not receive this broadcast packet?
In continuation of the scenario given in Q. No. 1, the university administration decides to secure the two departments (finance and examination) by connecting these on a separate LAN named as LAN B. So, network department can deploy a separate switch to connect all the systems of these departments.
Now there are total two LANs in this university, LAN A and LAN B. LAN B consists of finance and examination departments. LAN A consists of all remaining departments excluding finance and examination.
a) If there is no trunk between the two LANs and a broadcast packet is generated by a system in Finance department; which system(s) will not receive this broadcast packet?
b) As a network professional, what approach will you suggest to the network department to enable the communication among both LANs without bearing any extra cost?
