Premise:
A new trendy and catchy managerial acronym now days is “VUCA”, stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. These are four different types of situations requiring different types of responses. COVID-19 has brought unprecedented challenges for organizations and “VUCA” has become a new normal. The old ritual of dictating work by the top management to the subordinates, and ensuring that all tasks have been finally operated and executed is fading due to prevalent pandemic. This requires a change in strategy, otherwise they would be at disadvantage.
By calling attention to this and other limitations of traditional organizational structures, COVID-19 is speeding up the pace of necessary change. Organizations have been naturally put into situation where they have to modernize, for example, working remotely. Here, those organizations which were previously having less rigid structure have embraced this change easily. However, this sudden need of change has created opportunities to come up with new strategies
and affective ways of doing work.

For the organization which are transitioning from traditional to work remotely/virtually;a) Strategy and structure
b) Sizeandstructure
c) Environmental uncertainty and structure
2. What crucial points should organizations keep into consideration by going from “new normal” to “back to normal”, when COVID-19 crises fades? (5 Marks)

The basic objective of this discussion is to familiarize students with different managerial roles performed by the CEO of any organization.
Learning Outcome:
After participating in this GDB;
The students will learn regarding the application of appropriate managerial roles at the workplace.
The Premise:
At Al-Raheem Inc., the fiscal reports showed a considerable decline in productivity and profits. It was alarming for the higher management, so the CEO called the meeting of the managers of various departments including HR, Procurement, Marketing, Production, and Finance. In the meeting, it was revealed that there exists inter-departmental conflict(s) and each department was blaming others for the crisis. The first meeting ended in a heated exchange of words and blame game. The CEO asked the managers to compile a comprehensive report of their departments and present them in the next meeting. The reports from the departments suggested that they are fighting for more organizational resources to run their affairs.
Point of Discussion:
Being a student of management, you are required to suggest two decisional roles (Mintzberg’s Managerial Roles) suitable for the CEO to adopt in this situation. Also give two justifications for each role to resolve this issue.

In Role culture more emphasis is given to the organizational hierarchies. Power culture revolves around a single entity. Individuals possess the supreme worth in Person culture. Task culture is more task-based and only focuses on the completion of tasks. For more detail check the following model of Handy’s Culture:
Role Culture:
Such organizations are based on the assumptions that people are rational; and that roles can be defined and discharged with clearly defined procedures. They display stability, certainty and have great strength in situations marked by continuity; they often display weakness in adapting to, or generating, change.
Task Culture:
This is found in organizations where management is concerned with solving a series of problems. The structure is represented by a net, resources being drawn from all parts of the organization to meet the needs of current problems. Working parties, sub-committees, task forces and study groups are formed on an ad-hoc basis to deal with problems. This type of culture is seen to advantage when flexibility is required.
Power Culture:
Revolves around the strong leader who enjoys and uses power, and is graphically represented by a spider’s web. All lines of communication lead, formally or informally, to the leader. Such organizations display strength in speed of design making, their potential weakness lying in the caliber of the “one man bands” running them.
Person Culture:
Organizations characterized by these cultures are those where the organization exists to serve the individual and where individuals are not servants of the organization. They consist of groups of professionals, for example doctors or lawyers, with no “boss”. Co-ordination may be provided by a committee of peers. Such structures are becoming more common as more conventional organizations increasingly contract out work to professionals and specialists whose services are used only as and when required.
Recall the McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y and identify which theory (theory X or theory Y) facilitates each of the culture types (role, power, people and task culture) proposed by Handy. Case B:
In WinSum Textile Company, the new CEO called a meeting with the Board of Directors. In the meeting, they discussed the possible Joint Ventures with other companies. Many aspects of joint ventures came under discussion but still, it requires more consultative sessions and time for a final decision.
Point of Discussion:
In your opinion, which decision-making styles are used in Case A and B? Justify your answer with two logical reasons for each case.
