Assignment No. 02 Semester: Spring 2020CS206: Introduction to Network Design & Analysis Total Marks: 20
Due Date: 15th June 2020
Instructions:
Please read the following instructions carefully before submitting assignment:
You need to use MS word document to prepare and submit the assignment on VU-LMS.
It should be clear that your assignment will not get any credit if: The assignment is submitted after due date.
The assignment is not in the required format (.doc or docx).
The submitted assignment does not open or file is corrupt.
Assignment is copied (partial or full) from any source (websites, forums, students, etc). Objectives:
To enhance the learning capabilities of the students about:
• Packet fragmentation at link layer
• Determining shortest path tree based on cost analysisAssignment
Scenario:
Consider a system in an ethernet based local area network is connected with a server through Internet.
Assume that a datagram of 30000 Bytes (including the IP header) arrives at the router of local network. The router forwards this datagram to the link over the local network which needs to be fragmented before passing it to the link-layer. In the context of mentioned scenario, answer the following questions:Question No. 1 (A):
If the fragmentation is done with maximum transmission unit over the link layer, how many frames will be needed to carry out this datagram over the link? Write all necessary calculation steps.Question No. 1 (B):
What will be the size of last frame, if all the initial frames occupy data according to the maximum capacity (MTU)?Question No. 2:
The following diagram depicts a network of routers connected through various links (paths) having cost (weight) associated with each link. The routing algorithm determines the suitable path through the networks of routers based on the least cost. Based on the cost associated with each link, identify the shortest path for each destination router from ‘R’ and depict in the form of Shortest-Path Tree:Best of Luck!

To enhance the learning about IP allocation.
Assignment
Scenario:
An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is providing its services to 3500 customers in a residential area. If every customer is provided with a unique static IP address to avail Internet services then answer the following questions:
Question No. 1:
a) If IP address range can only be purchased as a block of 2n then how many minimum number of IP addresses should be purchased by the ISP for providing services to its customers?
b) If the ISP extends its services to another small residential area then how many maximum number of users can be accommodated using the remaining available static IP addresses from the first area?
Question No. 2:
In continuation of scenario given above, consider that maximum number of active (online) customers at a time are not more than 950 even after combining both the residential areas.a) Considering the maximum number of active users, static IP addressing is not suitable for the ISP. Which alternative approach (or protocol) can be used to minimize the number of IP address requirement of the ISP to continue its service for customers?
b) How many minimum number of IP addresses should be purchased by the ISP for providing services to its customers considering the maximum active users combining both the areas?
Best of Luck!

Assignment is copied (partial or full) from any source (websites, forums, students, etc)Objectives:
To enhance the learning capabilities of the students about:
• Ethernet LAN
• Virtual LAN
• MAC addressingAssignment
Scenario
A university has a small network infrastructure to support its routine operations which are divided among different departments like Administration, Registration, Examination, Finance, IT and Academics. A switch has been deployed to connect all the systems of these departments to a single broadcast domain. Considering the above-mentioned scenario, you are required to answer the following:
Question 1:
a) If a packet is received by a system in Examination department, how would the switch will decide that the packet is either unicast or broadcast?
b) If a broadcast packet is generated by a system in Finance department, which system(s) will not receive this broadcast packet?
Solution:
Question 2:
In continuation of the scenario given in Q. No. 1, the university administration decides to secure the two departments (finance and examination) by connecting these on a separate LAN named as LAN B. So, network department can deploy a separate switch to connect all the systems of these departments.
Now there are total two LANs in this university, LAN A and LAN B. LAN B consists of finance and examination departments. LAN A consists of all remaining departments excluding finance and examination.a) If there is no trunk between the two LANs and a broadcast packet is generated by a system in Finance department; which system(s) will not receive this broadcast packet?
b) As a network professional, what approach will you suggest to the network department to enable the communication among both LANs without bearing any extra cost?Solution:

@moaaz said in CS206 Assignment 1 Solution and Discussion:
ask 1:
Let’s assume that the network has just been powered on and there hasn’t been any flow of traffic occurred over the network yet.
a) What might be in the MAC address table of the switch?
b) If PC-1 sends a packet to PC-4, what action(s) will be performed by the switch?
Solution:
Solution:a) As the network is just switched on, so is the switch. Therefore, there will be no entry in the Address table (forwarding table) of the switch.
b) Switch will perform two operations. First it will check its MAC address table which is empty, and it will populate its address table with the MAC entry of the incoming packet. Secondly, it will repeat the incoming packet on all its ports other than the source port.Task 2:
Now assume that some data transfer has been occurred between the following devices:
i. PC-1 and PC-4
ii. PC-7 and PC-5
iii. PC-3 and Server
iv. PC-5 and PC-8What might be in the forwarding table of the switch? Give your answer in the >following format:
Solution:
MAC Address Port Number 0200.1111.1111 Fa0/1 0200.1111.4444 Fa0/4 0200.1111.7777 Fa0/7 0200.1111.5555 Fa0/5 0200.1111.3333 Fa0/3 0100.1111.1111 Fa0/9 0200.1111.8888 Fa0/8 Task 3:
Let’s assume that PC-1, PC-2, PC-3 and PC-4 belong to accounts department and PC-5, PC-6, PC-7 and PC-8 belong to admin department of an organization. Both departments have some concerns regarding security of their relevant departmental data, and they want to restrict unnecessary transfer of irrelevant traffic from each other. What approach can be implemented at the switch level to separate out network traffic of both the departments without changing the physical network configuration?Solution:
Both networks can be separated out by creating two VLANs on the switch and registering appropriate interfaces on the VLANs. This network behaves just like it would with the two physical switches. Switch does learn all the MAC addresses, but the switch does not forward broadcasts or unicasts from one VLAN to the other. It keeps a separate address table for each VLAN. This way both departments will be separated out. -
