The ongoing scandal that Facebook is now involved in has got many people concerned about their Facebook data. The longer answer: Well, it’s complicated. It would be logical to think that people are abandoning Facebook out of anger over the 50 million users’ whose data was harvested by Cambridge Analytica without their consent, or the fact that Facebook has been tracking their phone calls and texts for years and still hasn’t explained why or what it plans to do with that data. And while nearly half of survey respondents from this province, 45 per cent, said the news in the last month has worsened their opinion of Facebook, 52 per cent said their opinion had stayed the same and only three per cent said it had improved.”Removing these brokers is a no-brainer, as they add very little incremental value to advertisers and a lot of rightful scrutiny to Facebook”, Reinhardt said.Facebook refutes the reports, saying it explicitly asks for permission before collecting the personal information. But Android has always been more indulgent.”When this feature is enabled, uploading your contacts also allows us to use information like when a call or text was made or received”. Does being able to access data also mean that developers are automatically allowed to copy and retain data?Losing access to purchase history could hurt some advertisers. How to download your Facebook data?”Imagine hundreds of hours of work, tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in investment capital, and dozens of clients disappearing at any given moment at the whim of a few lines of code”, Troy Osinoff, cofounder of digital agency JUICE, wrote in a recent Facebook post in response to the pause. The company will still tap browser and device IDs to track visits to third-party sites and apps. But many Android users aren’t using the latest version of the software. We don’t even get location or page likes, let alone anything on your friends.Android is owned by Alphabet Inc’s Google, which is not named as a defendant in the suit. Less than 1 percent of Android devices now use the latest version of Android, known as “Oreo”. You could argue that Facebook’s previous settings and policies weren’t doing that.Even missed mobile phone calls were listed in the data. All that leaves two big questions unanswered. And how many other apps have taken advantages of the same setup?Facebook users who participated in the second survey, 41% say they will at least review their privacy settings, and 23% expect to reduce the time they spend on the platform. “This helps you find and stay connected with the people you care about, and provides you with a better experience across Facebook”, it said. Among other things, it narrows the scope of app permissions so they don’t suck in as much user data automatically. The company declined to comment further.
