Battle Royale games are by far the trendiest trends of the modern gaming era. Ever since the advent of H1Z1, there has been quite a large part of the gaming community that wants to fight tons of other players across the same map and try to be the last man standing. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 might end up having a Battle Royale mode as well which is why we are looking at the positives and the negatives of such a decision on such a long-standing franchise.Battle Royale games have quickly flooded the market, some would say at a faster rate than the DayZ Clones that came out a few years back. Even existing games have tried to add a variation of the mode into their game as displayed by Fortnite and Warhammer.Apart from this, there have been quite a few franchises who have toyed with the idea of adding a Battle Royale mode to cash in on the trend. As such, there are rumors swelling up whether or not Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will have the Battle Royale mode.Today, we will take an unbiased look at whether or not the Battle Royale genre will be a good cross over into the arcade story-based shooter that Call of Duty is. We will look at all of the positives followed by the negatives and then give a final verdict on what Activision should do.Why Battle Royale in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Might be a Good IdeaFirst of all, let’s look at the positives of having a brand-new game mode in the Call of Duty series. Chances are that Black Ops 4 will have some sort of alternative history-based story, as has been the case with the previous iterations of the game. As such, it will be fun to see how the different weapons that are available in the game will have an impact on a Battle Royale mode for the game.So far, it has not been confirmed in which era will the story of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be set. If it is set in some past war such as the Vietnam War like the original or any one of them which does not have modern weapons, then it will be the first time that we have a Battle Royale game which is set in a past war and does not have access to modern or fantasy weaponry.Call of Duty has always been a huge franchise; it will have a massive player base no matter what happens. However, a Battle Royale mode for the game will open it up to new audiences which may not be possible otherwise and may further propel the game towards success. Call of Duty has definitely felt lacking when compared to Battlefield in recent times and this could be the kick up that it needs to once again reclaim its spot as the undisputed kings of casual FPS genre. Why Should Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Avoid the Battle Royale GenreBattle Royale games can be a hassle to develop. First of all, you need a large map to accommodate enough players to make the game worth playing. This means that there will be an immeasurable number of bugs with the terrain and the buildings since the scale will make it impossible to test every single corner of the map. Secondly, trying to design the map and balance it will be a task which will take away developers from the other aspects of the game, and those aspects actually define Call of Duty.Another reason not to go for a Battle Royale mode is the fact that the market is flooded with games of the genre now. We all know what happened to the millions of DayZ clones, and the same can be expected for most of the Battle Royale games as well. PUBG by far dominates the market right now and dethroning it would probably be almost impossible, even for a franchise as huge as Call of Duty.Since there will be a singleplayer story mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 along with an extensive multiplayer experience featuring a plethora of modes, it is obvious that a Battle Royale mode will be an arcade mode which people can have fun with. However, Black Ops 4 will probably have Zombies, which is a staple of the game. If the addition of a Battle Royale mode ends up removing Zombies from the mix, then Treyarch stands to lose a lot of its core fanbase who would be buying Black Ops 4 to have fun with the Zombies mode. The VerdictI think the most important factor to consider is that Black Ops will probably end having a Zombies Mode, which is essential to the series since all of the fans expect the mode and a large portion of the potential player base will be buying the game mainly for the zombies’ mode. This means that a Battle Royale mode is not only out of the question, but also highly unlikely to have worked out for Call of Duty in the first place.Call of Duty has a place in the gaming community, and there is no reason for it to do something so radical as trying to fit in with a trend. PUBG, Fortnite and H1Z1 are more than enough to give the gaming community its fix for Battle Royale games and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 can be used by players who like to play survival games the old way, by knocking the heads off of zombies. That is all we have for should Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 get a Battle Royale mode.
