World’s third largest smartphone maker Huawei has lost Best Buy as its retail partner in the US. After being shunned by the US carriers Verizon and AT&T in a last-minute decision and, the Chinese company is now at a major setback in the American market.
Huawei Loses Best Buy After AT&T, Verizon
Best Buy, the largest electronics retail chain in the United States, has ceased ordering new smartphones from Huawei and is likely to stop selling its products altogether over the next few weeks. According to Best Buy’s spokeswoman, the decision has been made in alignment with the changing product offerings.
There are no additional details in the support of the decision of discontinuing sales of Huawei’s Mate series smartphones which were unveiled late last year. “We don’t comment on specific contracts with vendors, and we make decisions to change what we sell for a variety of reasons,” said a Best Buy spokeswoman.
Huawei Mate 10 ProHuawei Struggling To Establish Presence In The US
The year 2018 started with a major blow to the Chinese handset maker as the American cellular network AT&T suddenly dropped its plans to sell Huawei smartphones due to alleged political pressure from the US government. This was followed by a similar decision from the US carrier Verizon. The decision of ditching Huawei was apparently insinuated by the US government for security reasons. The government is concerned that Huawei might use its devices to spy for China.
A report dropped out in 2012 accusing Huawei and ZTE of creating devices that could be a potential threat to the security of the US. Although, the report did not mention smartphones and there wasn’t enough evidence to back these allegations. In its defence, a Huawei spokesperson said, “Our products and solutions are used by major carriers, Fortune 500 companies and hundreds of millions of consumers in more than 170 countries around the world.”
Huawei was supposed to announce a partnership with AT&T in January at CES 2018 to carry its flagship smartphone, the Mate 10 Pro. However, the carrier reportedly flaked by the political pressure. Best Buy could possibly be going through a similar situation or this could just be a profit-serving move. Nonetheless, this blow to the company has worsened their situation beyond repair. Huawei phones are still available online for purchase on Amazon, NewEgg and B&H. But, the ambitions of Huawei making it big in the US seems to be fading quickly since most of the US consumers buy their phones on contract through cellular carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon.
