WhatsApp Group Chats are a great way to stay in touch with friends, organise a get together or just shoot the breeze about the issues of the day. But sometimes they can be a little overwhelming.
You know what we mean. What starts as a genuine attempt to organise a group reunion rapidly devolves into an 18-way barney about which train operator is the least reliable. Which is great, if you’re in the mood for it. Not so much if you’re busy working or trying to relax.

Thankfully, there’s a way to opt out of these notifications without missing out on all the chat. It’s called Mute, and it could just be your new best friend. Here, we’ll show you how it works.
Step 1: Choose the group
This is the group you want to mute, be it an antenatal class, book club, sewing class or just your family. Find the group in WhatsApp, then tap and hold its name within the Chats list. On iOS, you’ll have to swipe its name to the left, then press More.
Step 2: Mute it
Once, it’s selected, it’s time to silence it. On Android, the Mute button appears in the top right corner once you’ve held down on the group name. On iOS, it appears after you’ve pressed More. Tap Mute. You can now select how long to mute notifications for.
And that’s it, blissful silence awaits. You’ll still receive messages from the group, but your phone won’t vibrate or make a sound.
Step 3: Disable notifications
If you want to stop notifications from the group too, just uncheck the Show notifications option.
Step 4: Find the exit
Perhaps you want to go a step further and leave the group altogether. You’ll still be able to see the chat history, and it will still appear in your Chats list.
To exit the group on Android, tap and hold the group name as before, then tap Menu > Exit Group. On iOS, it’s after the More button.
Step 5: Delete a group
The ultimate step is to delete the group. This purges it from your device, so it’ll never bother you again. In Chats, tap and hold the group name and tap the Trash can icon. That’s on Android. On iOS, it’s after the More button.
