Well, here’s something we don’t typically review on IR: smartphones. When I bought the iPhone 8 Plus last fall, I decided to do an extensive Field Test more or less as an excuse to thoroughly try out the camera. I came out rather impressed with the quality, all things considered. While the IR testing lab really isn’t designed to handle the limitations of smartphone cameras, when I got the opportunity to test out the Google Pixel 2, I jumped at the chance to do another smartphone field test!

Taking the Pixel 2 abroad while visiting Japan for CP+ as well as various locales in Atlanta and up on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a bit, I was able to get a good sense for the camera’s image quality and overall performance in a variety of situations and lighting conditions. Just as I experienced with the iPhone 8 Plus, I came away very impressed with the image quality, of course, within limitations of the smartphone’s small sensor size. In fact, for most situaions, I think the Pixel 2 out-does my iPhone 8 Plus in terms of image quality, at least with its default camera app and straight-from-camera JPEGs. Fine detail resolving power is very good, and its noise reduction is quite impressive.

Perhaps my favorite photo that I shot with the Pixel 2!4.4mm (27mm eq.), f/1.8, 1/3344s, ISO 63
