As the Witcher 3 has grown older, speculation regarding a possible Witcher 4 game has grown along with it. Its developer, CD Projekt Red, has stated before that it currently has no plans for a fourth game, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking about it. However, it looks like the developer has well and truly closed the door on the possibility of seeing another chapter added to the story of Geralt.
It’s not an understatement to say that CD Projekt Red has its hands full right now. Development for Cyberpunk 2077 is well underway and CDPR’s Gwent card game is currently in open beta. With so much going on, one would think that development for the Witcher 4 would be outside the realm of possibility. It turns out that such a sentiment, while not entirely accurate, is not too far from the truth.

At the Pareto Securities’ Gaming Seminar, CD Projekt Red’s Adam Kicinski briefly addressed the subject once again. “We can’t create Witcher 4 because that was a trilogy from the beginning,” Kicinski said. He then took the opportunity to expand on earlier comments made about revisiting the Witcher universe. “No one said that one day we won’t decide to develop something in the Witcher universe, but now we’re focusing on Cyberpunk and Gwent.” So while Witcher 4 might be out of the question, fans may still have a chance to return to that world via eventual spin-offs or prequels.
As for Cyberpunk 2077, “focus” might be a touch too soft of a word when describing the studio’s commitment to its development. CD Projekt Red recently opened an entirely new studio to support the game’s development, and while they still haven’t revealed all that much about Cyberpunk 2077, the details provided so far paint a picture of a game much more massive than anything seen from them thus far.

Having the possibility of the Witcher 4 completely shut-down may be disappointing for some fans, but CD Projekt Red’s admirable dedication to Cyberpunk 2077 might just be enough to mollify the blow a bit. If that’s not the case, then at least those Witcher fans who also enjoy fighting game have Geralt’s guest appearance in Soul Calibur 6 to look forward to. Either way, the book of Geralt’s adventures may be closed for now, but that doesn’t mean that CD Projekt Red’s fans don’t have plenty of good reasons to look forward to what’s coming next.
