Any future Elon Musks or Marie Curies out there?
For those parents with kids who could not give a shit about the Bubble Guppies or other educational shows on Nickelodeon, they’re probably itching for something a little more challenging.
Enter: Amazon’s STEM Club Toys subscription service, and our favorite subscription box this week.
is the *cutest* STEM subscription box, with age range options as low as three years old — so you can get them started on being a kid genius early. Handpicked by STEM experts, your kid will receive a toy each month that encourages learning about science, technology, engineering, and math through playing and building.
And these aren’t just any toys — they’re toys that will keep your kid’s attention for longer than five minutes. (Parents of kids with ADHD in the reviews have even mentioned how well these toys hold up with their kids.) They think they’re just playing without a care in the world, but you get the satisfaction of knowing they’re also getting a head start for school. When kids get to learn while playing and don’t feel like math and science are being shoved down their throat, it makes them a whole lot more excited to participate.
The coolest part is that you can customize the shipments to your kid’s age, save the toys to pass down to younger siblings, or get a subscription for multiple kiddos of different ages. Here’s an idea of what each age range subscription has to offer:
3-4 years old: Counting, building, simple motor skills
The 3-4 year old kits teach simple concepts related to counting, building, and cause and effect physics skills, giving little ones an extra solid foundation to enter preschool.
In one of the most mentioned projects in the reviews, kids will get to build an adorable little car with the Thames and Kosmos Automobile Engineer Kit. They’ll follow along in the story book with Karlie and Ty, two kids making simple models of 10 vehicles that they see on a trip with their dad. Chunky, colorful plastic pieces make it easy for small hands to put models together, aimed to aid in development of fine motor skills and visual-spatial skills. The kit is regularly priced at $44.99, but will be only $19.99 with the monthly subscription.
5-7 years old: Earth science, dinosaurs, and robots
The 5-7 year old kits aims to excite young learners using hands-on experiments to explore electricity, earth science, and simple math.
One possible project is the Robotis Play 600 Pets Kit. Kids will whip up a motorized, reconfigurable robot pet (you even can tell them they have to learn to take care of this before they can get a real pet). Using an interactive 3D app on iOS, Android, or PC, they’ll assemble up to seven different figures that can move like a real animal with the included remote control. They can also make up their own creations, too. In another box, they’ll get to create their own dinosaur fossils, which is too cool. This kit is regularly priced at $39.95, but will be only $19.99 with the monthly subscription.
8-13 years old: Chemistry, electronics, and circuits
The 8-13 year kits are really impressive: Aimed toward future scientists and engineers, these kits offer significantly more challenge with projects and experiences in principles of physics, chemistry, and engineering. Some projects may require a little adult help, which can double as fun family bonding.
One possible project is the Smart Circuits Games and Gadgets Electronics Lab. With a 48-page instruction book, loads of modules, different types of batteries, jumper wires, and baseboards, kids can build a virtually unlimited number of games and electronics such as motion-sensing room alarms, an electronic drum kit, and a quiz show game. (You’ll never hear the words “I’m bored,” again.) This kit is regularly priced at $49.99, but will be just $19.99 with the monthly subscription.
Here’s what a few parents have to say:
Amazon customer Sarah H writes:
“I have received this subscription for months now and couldn’t be happier!!! I have four girls (5, 8, 9,10) and they love this. My oldest is a gifted learner and she really maximizes her use of the 8-13 year old kit. My other 3 have become avid science fans because of this STEM program. A 100% win for Amazon!!! No better investment than an investment in a child’s health on education. This one surely meets the mark on an investment in their education!!!”
Amazon customer Johnny J. Ray follows up with:
“Engineering is more than following instructions on a sheet of paper, it is about taking concepts and applying them in new ways to build something new. The toys I have received so far are the type of toys that are fun for them to play with, but also provides that “spark” that will help them to think of intuitive new ways to build things. I definitely recommend.”
Rated 4.3 out of 5 stars with over 1,000 reviews, these kits are ace for giving kids a serious head start on their future — while keeping them busy at the same time. Check out your options here.
